As part of the Keep Rockland Beautiful-sponsored Great American Cleanup 2013, we will meet for a few hours in the Village (Downtown and the Greenway) to do some spring cleaning. Bring plants to plant, gloves, and a trash picking attitude.

Hudson Valley Brickyard 5000

Hudson Valley Brickyard 5000 – October 14, 2012

If you haven’t yet done so, please sign the petition to boost the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry schedule. Currently, the ferry only runs for commuters in the morning and evening. The ferry should be expanded to include midday, late night, and weekends. When this happens, Haverstraw will become another major node in the extensive regional transportation network. Sign here: http://www.change.org/petitions/boost-the-economy-expand-the-ferry

Expand the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry into “off-peak” times. We call on Governor Cuomo to publicly commit to studying, once more, passenger transit service across the proposed Tappan Zee Bridge replacement. Without expanded transit, Rockland continues to feel the negative effects of jobs inaccessibility, car-oriented development, pollution, pressure on government services, high taxes, and stagnating growth. Please, read a recent report by the Brookings Institution ranking the NYC Metro area as the worst urban/suburban imbalance for transit access to jobs: http://www.brookings.edu/research/papers/2012/07/11-transit-jobs-tomer Rockland transit access and development patterns pushes the metro area to achieve this poor ranking. http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/Research/Files/Papers/2012/7/transit%20labor%20tomer/pdf/New_York.pdf Cities in the region have a labor access rate of 58%. Conversely, outer suburbs have a labor access rate of around 14%. This is a very large imbalance. (more…)

Google, NY Waterway, and the MTA MetroNorth Railroad have finally heeded my repeated requests to have the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry schedule added to Google Transit Directions! Enjoy using the transit app now; Haverstraw is finally and legitimately linked to the region.

Learn to Row Day 2012 is on Saturday, June 2

Posted: May 29, 2012 by HaverstrawLife.com in Activities, Downtown, Events, Waterfront

June 2, 2012 – 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM

National Learn to Row Day at the Haverstraw Ferry Landing at Dr. Girling Drive, Haverstraw, NY.

Each year, the North Rockland Rowing Club hosts Learn to Row Day to expose more New Yorkers and Rocklanders to the sport of rowing or crew. Refine your technique on a rowing machine and/or get in a boat to learn the basics. The Club will take you out on the Hudson River to experience rowing firsthand! Don’t worry, they take numerous safety precautions when introducing beginners to the sport. This is a great event for families and children, as well as adults that are looking for new ways to stay fit.

On May 20, 2012, over 5,000 cyclists will descend upon the Village of Haverstraw (right through Downtown) as they make their way from New York City to the top of Perkins Memorial Drive on Bear Mountain. The Gran Fondo is a 110-mile (177 km) endurance race fashioned after similar cycling events in Italy. Cyclists will climb over 8,500 vertical feet over the George Washington Bridge, the Palisades Escarpment, along the Hudson River, and finally to the top of Bear Mountain in the Highlands. A ‘Medio Fondo’ is offered to cyclists that choose to be non-competitive. See the Gran Fondo cycling route here: http://www.granfondony.com/course.php Riders/cyclists will be moving through the area between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM on Sunday, May 20, 2012. The best place to view the Gran Fondo is from New Main Street and Broadway.

Arguably one of the most exciting events to take place in the Village of Haverstraw is the Annual Brickyard Sprints hosted by the North Rockland Rowing Club. This year, the Brickyard Sprints will take place on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry Landing in the Village of Haverstraw (just north of the Harbors at Haverstraw on Dr. Girling Drive). The races will last from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM, although delays are likely and the racing could continue later into the day depending on weather and conditions on the Hudson River. Four crew teams from across the region will visit the Village of Haverstraw to compete in the Brickyard Sprints. The races are best viewed from the Ferry Landing parking lot, the Haverstraw Elks Club, or from Emeline Park. However, much of the action will be at the Ferry Landing. The race starting line is at Bowline Point Park and stretches down to the Ferry dock, roughly 1500 meters. Stop by and support rowing on the Hudson River! For more information, visit www.northrocklandrowingclub.org or call (845) 942-1030. See you there!

ImageThe waterfront promenade, currently stretching from Warren Avenue to the old chair factory peninsula and from the edge of the Tilcon rock quarry to the ferry landing, is about to grow. The Village will connect the two sections of the promenade and effectively double the walkway in length. By receiving a grant from the State of New York in 2008, the Village will spend roughly $1 Million on improvements to the existing sections and filling in the gap. When complete, the promenade will extend from the Harbors at Haverstraw, along the ferry landing, through Emeline Park, around the old chair factory, and through to Warren Avenue where it will eventually connect to the Bowline Point recreation area. TZB Transit Alternative: Expand Ferry Service

Posted: February 15, 2012 by HaverstrawLife.com in Ferry Service, Sustainability, Waterfront

Governor Cuomo has worked with the federal government to “fast track” the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement environmental review. Planning will speed along and the project could be ready for groundbreaking by fall 2012. No funding sources have been secured. Rockland County and Westchester County residents were shocked to learn that the originally planned-for mass transit component of the project was dropped from the expedited environment review. Ten years of planning for cross-Hudson rail or bus rapid transit evaporated in a matter of days. Instead, the bridge will contain 8 full lanes of traffic, shoulders, emergency lanes and one pedestrian corridor comprising a bridge that is roughly 200 feet wide on two separate spans. . . There are a lot of angry New Yorkers these days. (more…)

While trekking through the blogosphere, I came across a nice article from the Toronto Sun about a $14 per day option to vacation in “New York City.” Instead of paying $150+ per night at a New York hotel, a visitor might enjoy more rustic accommodations for, yes, around $14 per night. The article highlights that visitors to the New York area can stay in rustic, stone cabins in Harriman State Park and make it into midtown Manhattan within 1h15m via Hudson River Ferry from Haverstraw. It’s a great article, and it makes for an incredible and memorable trip. Here’s the article. Tonto Sun: New York City on $14 a Night (The Real Deal)

Here’s the Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations episode on the Hudson Valley. He captures the classic attitude of most New York City dwellers (and tourists) toward “Upstate,” or the Hudson Valley. I continually argue that the Hudson Valley is a world of its own, not a piece of the generic “upstate” moniker. Keep your eyes peeled for some nice shots of Haverstraw. I’ll warn you, there are a few errors in the episode. At 7:00, shots of Grassy Point are mistakenly used for Verplanck. Below is the first of three segments. The following two segments will automatically play, so keep watching.
