Governor Cuomo released renderings of his proposed mega bridge. The bridge will be twice as wide as the existing Tappan Zee Bridge, even though traffic over the span has been declining since 2004 (a nationwide phenomenon). Oddly enough, it is to be the widest highway bridge in the world. The video rendering, below, appears to include a “ghost train” at around 1:33, which is an insult to Rockland as the County continues to stagnate economically due to its lack of infrastructure and connections to major job markets. Cuomo eliminated planning for rail over the span roughly one year ago. Someone explain to me how this project isn’t a massive taxpayer gift to the highway lobby? Dear New York State, may we please enter the 21st Century? We’re already in its second decade! Slick back your hair, put on a poodle dress and feast your eyes on this 1950s-era Eisenhower masterpiece . . .

And . . . the State ought to be thinking about expanding existing transit that we have. Imagine what we could have done with $7 Billion?

In other news, the Chair Factory site just north of Emeline Park in the Village of Haverstraw is to become a major staging area for Tappan Zee Bridge construction activities. Iron workers will fabricate massive bridge sections at the site and then float these components by barge to the Tappan Zee. Some State officials expect the Village to be flooded with iron workers and others working on the bridge project. The staging area will effectively tie up future development on the Chair Factor site (originally intended to become Phase III of Ginsburg Development’s waterfront revitalization project) until at least 2019. The original Tappan Zee Bridge components were fabricated in dry dock at the former clay pit that now is home to a deep water harbor, Haverstraw Marina. Both bridges, new and old, was and will be born in Haverstraw.

Hot off the presses, this New York Times article “Creating Hipsturbia in the Suburbs of New York” touches a whole slew of nerves and advances shallow ideas regarding demographic shifts in the Hudson Valley. The article confidently declares that Westchester Hudson River villages of Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Tarrytown, Irvington and the like are becoming enclaves of that same Bohemian lifestyle that brought downtrodden Brooklyn back to life. No mention of Beacon, New York here. The article is the latest in a raft of publications and posts since 2010 that avow the too-cool aspects of the Hudson Valley. This edition is particularly sad because it fully ignores these towns’ history, while somehow comparing the “transformation” of these places to Brooklyn’s revival. The villages mentioned in the article are some of the whitest, wealthiest, and most educated zip codes in North America . . . and they were that way well before the word “hipster” existed. This is nothing like Brookyn’s transformation – in fact, it is astroturf.

“Welcome to hipsturbia,” indeed. (more…)

If you haven’t yet done so, please sign the petition to boost the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry schedule. Currently, the ferry only runs for commuters in the morning and evening. The ferry should be expanded to include midday, late night, and weekends. When this happens, Haverstraw will become another major node in the extensive regional transportation network. Sign here: http://www.change.org/petitions/boost-the-economy-expand-the-ferry

Expand the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry into “off-peak” times. We call on Governor Cuomo to publicly commit to studying, once more, passenger transit service across the proposed Tappan Zee Bridge replacement. Without expanded transit, Rockland continues to feel the negative effects of jobs inaccessibility, car-oriented development, pollution, pressure on government services, high taxes, and stagnating growth. Please, read a recent report by the Brookings Institution ranking the NYC Metro area as the worst urban/suburban imbalance for transit access to jobs: http://www.brookings.edu/research/papers/2012/07/11-transit-jobs-tomer Rockland transit access and development patterns pushes the metro area to achieve this poor ranking. http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/Research/Files/Papers/2012/7/transit%20labor%20tomer/pdf/New_York.pdf Cities in the region have a labor access rate of 58%. Conversely, outer suburbs have a labor access rate of around 14%. This is a very large imbalance. (more…)

On May 20, 2012, over 5,000 cyclists will descend upon the Village of Haverstraw (right through Downtown) as they make their way from New York City to the top of Perkins Memorial Drive on Bear Mountain. The Gran Fondo is a 110-mile (177 km) endurance race fashioned after similar cycling events in Italy. Cyclists will climb over 8,500 vertical feet over the George Washington Bridge, the Palisades Escarpment, along the Hudson River, and finally to the top of Bear Mountain in the Highlands. A ‘Medio Fondo’ is offered to cyclists that choose to be non-competitive. See the Gran Fondo cycling route here: http://www.granfondony.com/course.php Riders/cyclists will be moving through the area between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM on Sunday, May 20, 2012. The best place to view the Gran Fondo is from New Main Street and Broadway.

Arguably one of the most exciting events to take place in the Village of Haverstraw is the Annual Brickyard Sprints hosted by the North Rockland Rowing Club. This year, the Brickyard Sprints will take place on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry Landing in the Village of Haverstraw (just north of the Harbors at Haverstraw on Dr. Girling Drive). The races will last from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM, although delays are likely and the racing could continue later into the day depending on weather and conditions on the Hudson River. Four crew teams from across the region will visit the Village of Haverstraw to compete in the Brickyard Sprints. The races are best viewed from the Ferry Landing parking lot, the Haverstraw Elks Club, or from Emeline Park. However, much of the action will be at the Ferry Landing. The race starting line is at Bowline Point Park and stretches down to the Ferry dock, roughly 1500 meters. Stop by and support rowing on the Hudson River! For more information, visit www.northrocklandrowingclub.org or call (845) 942-1030. See you there!

Unique, life-size dog and cat sculptures have been sighted at several locations (often in downtown storefronts) in Downtown Haverstraw! The sculptures are part of the Great Painted Paw Brigade, a public art exhibition that will culminate in a live auction on June 3, 2012. Below, is a map depicting the known locations of these dogs and cats in the Village of Haverstraw.

Come to the gallery opening of the Great Painted Paw Brigade, a public art project that is to begin on Friday March 2, 2012. The project is hosted by the North Rockland Rowing Club. The Great Painted Paw Brigade begins with the March 2 Gallery Opening when cat and dog sculptures are previewed by area residents and visitors. The sculptures then go out to be displayed at host businesses and restaurants for a two-month period. The artists will join their sponsors at the gallery to discuss the meaning behind their works of art. A map will be available to show you where each sculpture is on display. The project culminates in early June with a gala and public auction to deliver each sculpture to the highest bidder. A portion of the proceeds from the Great Painted Paw Brigade are shared with the Hi-Tor Animal Care Center. RSVP to the gallery opening via facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/252098644866516/ Or, visit www.paintedpawbrigade.com for more information.

Donna Schmidt, HaverstrawLife contributor and blogger, interviewed Mr. Samuel Harps from Shades Repertory Theater at the Central Presbyterian Church in the Village of Haverstraw, N.Y.

In 1997, Samuel Harps was wearing sunglasses.

His future looking bright, he took them off and laid them on the table. He and an actor friend, Tony Ortiz, were at SUNY Rockland Community College showing one of Harps’ plays when a gentleman approached them, “I would like to donate to your organization, what is its name?” he asked.  Harps quickly looked around, saw the shades on the surface and said, “The name of our company is Shades.  Ortiz said “yes…yes…Shades, we are a Multi-Cultural organization.”

Wouldn’t it be great if a resident or a visitor to the Village of Haverstraw could walk, jog or bike to and from the artsy Garnerville Arts & Industrial Center, also known as GAGA? There exists a major opportunity to directly link Downtown Haverstraw with GAGA along the Minisceongo Creek. Currently, the Millenium natural gas pipeline runs in an open right of way adjacent to the Creek from GAGA’s “Creekside” sculpture park to the long-ignored sculpture park in front of the old ‘Hornick’ factory at the junction of Broadway and Samsondale Avenue in the Village. Let’s call the path “Downtown2GAGA.” The following image is a “walking shed” study of the proposed pedestrian path:

Bella Rose Lasagna - Borrowed from the UN of Food

A feisty food blogger from the United Nations of Food (one small man’s attempt to eat food from every country without leaving NYC ) took a weekend excursion with his fiance to Haverstraw where he was admittedly “shocked” by the wide selection of uber-awesome, unpretentious, Hudson Valley, non-yuppie, blue collar Latin/Italian, etc. food. Several times he exclaims in as many ways as he can: “And guess what?  I had it all wrong.  Haverstraw, formerly known as the brickmaking capital of the world, is a mostly working-class town, featuring a gravel mine and a gigantic oil-fired power plant.  No silly, pretentious food here.  Not even in the prettiest cafe in town.” That pretty cafe he mentions? Well, that’s the Bella Rose Cafe on New Main Street. And where did they sleep while staying in the Village? In the best bed and breakfast in the County, the Bricktown Inn on Hudson Avenue. (more…)

The Rockland Street Kids’ Fair, hosted by the Bricktown Gospel Fellowship, drew large crowds of Village families to Downtown Haverstraw to take part in a day of fun and games. Rockland Street was shut down to vehicles to accommodate the festival. The fair included fun activities for the kids, including crafts and a small petting zoo.

Haverstraw’s throwing a celebration on the double yellow line! The event is called ‘Dancing Under the Stars’ and will feature live Latin music by Brisa Tropical. The popular Dancing Under the Stars series draws the Village’s well-knowns and also visitors from across the Hudson Valley. It’s bound to be a fun evening!

What: Dancing Under the Stars
When: 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, July 22
Where: In front of Haverstraw Village Hall at 40 New Main Street
